The National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRMA) has held a strategic engagement with the Mano River Union (MRU) as part of ongoing efforts to deepen regional cooperation in the sustainable management of transboundary water resources within the Mano River Basin.
The engagement focused on strengthening institutional coordination to consolidate gains already achieved under the Strategic Action Plan for transboundary water management. Key areas of discussion included the operationalization of the Mano River Transboundary Water Basin Management Office, enhanced data and information sharing, climate resilience measures, and other related issues consistent with NWRMA’s mandate under the National Water Resources Management Act, 2017.

Officials noted that effective management of shared water resources requires strong collaboration at both national and sub-regional levels, particularly in addressing emerging challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and competing water uses across borders.
Speaking during the engagement, the Secretary General of the Mano River Union, Ambassador Simeon M. B. Moriba, reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to the sustainable management of transboundary water resources. He provided background on the MRU’s mandate in managing shared natural resources and emphasized the importance of agreed implementation structures at the sub-regional level.

Ambassador Moriba stressed that successful execution of transboundary water initiatives requires concurrence and active participation from all member states of the Union, noting that cooperation and mutual trust are essential for long-term water security and regional stability.
The engagement also underscored the importance of harmonizing national water governance frameworks with regional strategies to ensure equitable access, environmental sustainability, and resilience to climate-related risks across the Mano River Basin.
NWRMA officials described the collaboration as a significant step toward strengthening regional water governance and advancing shared goals in water security, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
The renewed partnership with the Mano River Union reinforces NWRMA’s commitment to responsible, inclusive, and cooperative management of Sierra Leone’s water resources, while contributing to broader regional efforts to safeguard shared water systems for present and future generations.
