The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has announced that the government will begin removing all illegal banners and street signs across the country, enforcing a warning first issued in May last year.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Democracy, the Minister stated that the Ministries of Internal Affairs and the Sierra Leone Police have been directed to collaborate with local councils to immediately take down all unauthorised signs, banners, and posters displayed in public spaces.
The decision follows a high-level meeting convened by the Chief Minister, David Sengeh, under the instructions of President Julius Maada Bio. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Freetown City Council, and the Ministries of Information, Local Government, Transport, and Internal Affairs, as well as the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) and the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA).
Discussions focused on the growing proliferation of unauthorised street signs, banners, and posters, particularly in urban centres.
The meeting resulted in the establishment of an inter-agency technical team jointly chaired by the Office of the Chief Minister and the Ministry of Information and Civic Education. The team has been mandated to review existing regulations and restore order to public signage nationwide.
“We remind all individuals and organisations that no signage should be displayed without proper clearance or payment of the required fees,” the statement emphasised.
Describing the action as a civic responsibility, the government called on the public to support efforts to protect communities, beautify streets, and uphold the rule of law.
