Following a series of devastating fire incidents at Nyapui Secondary School, the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, led a high-level delegation to the school’s campus.
The visit comes in response to a “troubling pattern” of fires that has seen two major buildings destroyed in less than a month. On February 3, a fire gutted the school’s boarding hostel, and just weeks later, a second blaze destroyed a major school hall.
Minister Sackey, accompanied by senior Ministry officials, met with school authorities, local community stakeholders, and the Sierra Leone Fire Force to assess the damage and address the underlying causes of the recurring incidents.
“Our visit was not only to assess the damage, but to listen, understand, and work together to determine the causes and prevent such incidents from happening again,” Minister Sackey said.
He emphasized that the safety of students is the government’s highest priority, noting that the frequency of the fires calls for heightened vigilance.
“Our schools must remain places of safety, opportunity, and hope. Every classroom we protect is an investment in the dreams and potential of our young people,” the Minister added.
Minister Sackey commended the leadership of Nyapui Secondary School and the wider Kenema community for their resilience. Despite the significant property loss, no lives were lost in either incident, thanks to swift evacuation protocols already in place.
The Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Nyapui and all schools across Sierra Leone remain safe environments for learning. Investigations into the specific causes of the fires are ongoing.
