The continuous increase in the price of fuel in the country has become a major concern for many citizens. The rise in fuel prices is influenced by both internal and external factors, some of which are beyond the direct control of the government.

In the past, both APC and SLPP governments used to subsidize fuel to keep the price affordable for the population. However, the cost of maintaining this subsidy became extremely high. As a result, the government has decided to redirect those funds to other developmental sectors of the country.

Despite this decision, the rising cost of fuel continues to affect many people, especially the poor. Individuals who depend on daily movement from one place to another in order to earn their daily living are the most affected. Traders, workers, and other small business owners who rely on transportation now face increasing difficulties.

Students are also feeling the impact. Many students depend on the small transportation fare provided by their parents, which is now barely enough due to the increase in transport costs.
As a result of the high fares, some people are now forced to walk long distances, while others only travel when they have enough money. This situation is creating additional hardship for low-income earners across the country.

It is important to note that about ninety percent of commercial vehicles in the country are owned by private individuals. These operators are primarily focused on maximizing profits and may not necessarily prioritize the welfare of the general public.

To help reduce the burden on citizens, the government should consider increasing the number of public buses in operation. Additionally, authorities could explore the possibility of reintroducing the railway system in Freetown or introducing ferry transportation services. These alternatives could significantly reduce transportation costs and ease the financial pressure on low-income earners.

The rising cost of fuel remains a serious national issue that requires practical and sustainable solutions for the benefit of the masses.
