The main opposition party, the All Peoples Congress (APC), has formally written to Statistics Sierra Leone seeking urgent clarification over concerns surrounding the monitoring and transparency of the ongoing national cartographic mapping exercise.
In a letter dated March 16, 2026, and addressed to the Statistician General at Statistics Sierra Leone, the APC raised questions following statements made during a live television broadcast on AYV Media Empire on March 15.
According to the letter, a representative of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Mr. Mambu, who appeared in his capacity as Public Relations Officer, claimed that the party had established a coordinating committee working closely with Statistics Sierra Leone. He stated that the SLPP had been actively monitoring the work of census mappers and collecting real-time data from the cartographic mapping process.
The APC expressed concern over these remarks, highlighting what it described as a disparity in access and oversight. The party noted that its own Census Technical Committee has reportedly been restricted by Statistics Sierra Leone from monitoring the same mapping activities or accessing real-time data.
“This raises serious questions about fairness, transparency, and the independence of the national census process,” the APC implied, pointing to the importance of equal access for all political stakeholders in such a critical national exercise.
Additionally, the APC referenced claims made during the same broadcast that the second phase of the mapping exercise had already been completed, with the third phase currently underway. The party is now seeking official confirmation and clarification on the status and structure of the exercise.
The cartographic mapping process is a key preparatory stage for the national census, as it determines enumeration areas and ensures accurate population data collection. Any perceived lack of neutrality or transparency could undermine public confidence in the credibility of the entire census process.
Statistics Sierra Leone has yet to publicly respond to the APC’s concerns.
