An appeal for humanitarian assistance has been launched following a devastating fire that destroyed the residence of Mr. Theophilus Sahr Gbenda, Deputy Assistant National Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).
According to reports from colleagues and close associates, the incident occurred late Thursday night after Mr. Gbenda had returned home from work, only to discover that his house had already been consumed by flames. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but sources say the destruction was extensive, leaving him without any personal belongings or valuables.
Individuals familiar with the situation described the incident as “deeply unfortunate,” emphasizing that Mr. Gbenda has been left with virtually nothing in the aftermath of the blaze. The loss has prompted an outpouring of concern within the media community and among his associates.
In response, members of the journalism fraternity, along with concerned friends and well-wishers, have initiated a support drive aimed at helping Mr. Gbenda recover and rebuild. Organizers of the effort have encouraged those willing to assist to contribute through an Orange Money account registered under the name Edward Marah.
They further stated that all donations will be properly documented, with detailed records of contributors and amounts to be presented to Mr. Gbenda to ensure transparency and accountability.
Those leading the appeal have stressed the importance of collective support during such a difficult time, calling on the public-particularly members of the media community-to assist in whatever capacity they can.
It has been clarified, however, that the appeal is not an official communication from the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists Secretariat, but rather an independent initiative organized by friends and well-wishers.
The incident underscores the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis, especially for individuals confronted with sudden and life-altering losses.
