All 22 councillors of the Freetown City Council (FCC) have publicly expressed support for Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk, following recent allegations of bribery linked to an attempted impeachment.
Reports had claimed that four councillors received payments of 100,000 New Leones each (about $4 USD) as part of a plan to remove the Mayor. In response, the councillors issued a joint statement over the weekend, rejecting the allegations as “baseless” and “misleading,” and emphasizing their commitment to the city’s development agenda.
“These rumors are clearly intended to create division and distraction from the progress being made in Freetown,” the statement read.
The show of unity comes as the FCC implements its flagship Transform Freetown program, targeting improvements in sanitation, urban planning, and service delivery.
Councillors stressed that their focus remains on advancing these initiatives rather than engaging in political disputes.
