Austria’s Federal President, Alexander Van der Bellen, has lauded Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, for his leadership in advancing women’s empowerment through the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act.

During a bilateral meeting on the margins of the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum, President Van der Bellen praised the Bio administration for measures aimed at safeguarding the rights of women and children, as well as strengthening social protection systems across Sierra Leone. He further expressed keen interest in how similar legislation could be replicated across other African countries to promote gender equality.

Discussions between the two leaders also highlighted Sierra Leone’s strides in human capital development. Both presidents emphasized the critical importance of equipping local populations with relevant skills to ensure African countries fully benefit from the global shift toward clean energy and green industrialization.

President Van der Bellen affirmed the need for sustained support to Sierra Leone’s flagship Free Quality Education initiative, noting its role in building a more inclusive and productive society.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of both nations to deepening cooperation in areas of education, sustainable development, and social advancement.
