The Government of Sierra Leone, in partnership with international development agencies, has reaffirmed its commitment to ending child marriage, as key stakeholders convened for a high-level multi-sectoral engagement on Monday, April 13, 2026.
The joint coordination team of UNICEF and UNFPA hosted a luncheon at The Hub Restaurant, bringing together government officials, development partners, and sector leaders to strengthen collaboration under the Global Programme to End Child Marriage.
The forum served as an important platform to highlight Sierra Leone’s integrated and multi-sectoral approach to addressing child marriage and adolescent pregnancy, while exploring opportunities for enhanced cooperation and sustained impact.
The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, delivered a presentation outlining the ministry’s strategic role in supporting national efforts to end child marriage.
He emphasized that the programme has made significant contributions to improving child welfare and reducing harmful practices affecting girls.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Minister Bah expressed appreciation to development partners for their continued support, noting that protecting girls and advancing women’s rights remain a central priority of the current administration.
He highlighted key national initiatives, including the “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign, efforts to reduce teenage pregnancy, and the enforcement of sexual offences laws, as part of a broader strategy to safeguard the rights and wellbeing of girls.
The Minister also pointed to progress made in strengthening the country’s legal framework, particularly enactment of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2024, which represents a significant milestone in protecting children from early and forced marriage.
