Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security (PI-CREF), has been appointed to the Rockefeller Foundation High-Level Panel on Universal Energy Abundance, in a move seen as a significant milestone in his international energy and development work.

Dr. Yumkella, who also serves as Chair of the Energy Governance Coordination Group (EGCG), joins a selected group of global policymakers and experts working to expand access to reliable and sustainable energy worldwide.

The panel, according to the announcement, “brings together influential thinkers and policymakers working toward expanding access to reliable, sustainable energy worldwide,” an issue described as one of the defining challenges of the current era.

His appointment reflects his long-standing involvement in global energy discussions and policy development. Observers say his inclusion “alongside other global figures speaks volumes about both his expertise and the growing recognition of Sierra Leone’s contributions to international development and energy policy.

Over the years, Dr. Yumkella has been a prominent voice in areas such as sustainable energy, climate action, and economic transformation. His new role on the panel is widely viewed as a continuation of that work at a higher global level.

In addition to his international engagement, Dr. Yumkella continues to play a central role in Sierra Leone’s domestic energy and climate agenda through PI-CREF, an initiative under the Office of the President, as well as through his leadership of the EGCG, which coordinates governance across the energy sector.

The appointment is also being interpreted as symbolically important for Sierra Leone, with analysts noting that moments like this reinforce the country’s growing presence in global policy spaces.

They emphasize that Sierra Leone is not only participating in international conversations on energy and development but is increasingly helping to shape them.
