The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has announced a temporary shutdown of electricity supply in eastern Freetown to allow for the safe transportation of a turbine to the Nant Power Station in Kissy Dockyard.

In a press release issued on April 17, 2026, EDSA stated that the planned outage will take place on Saturday, April 18, between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The interruption will affect communities across the eastern part of the capital, Freetown, spanning from Blackhall Road to Waterloo.

According to the Authority, the shutdown is necessary to support the safe movement of the turbine from Water Quay to its installation site. EDSA explained that, as part of safety measures, a test run and route clearance exercise have already been conducted to prevent disruptions during transportation.

The joint operations team has requested the shutdown of all 33kV power lines within the distribution network, particularly in the east, to enable the safe evacuation of the turbines,” the statement said.

EDSA emphasized that the temporary interruption is part of broader efforts to strengthen critical infrastructure and improve electricity supply and service reliability in the country.

The Authority has advised residents and businesses in the affected areas to take necessary precautions during the outage period and expressed appreciation for public understanding and cooperation.
