The Parliament of Sierra Leone has ratified the Amendment to Article 10(4) of the Constitution of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), a move aimed at strengthening the country’s transport and aviation sector. The ratification took place on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.

The amendment was originally adopted during the 28th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 31 January 2017.

Presenting the agreement to Parliament, Minister of Transport and Aviation, Fanday Turay, described the ratification as a significant step toward expanding Sierra Leone’s transportation infrastructure. He noted that the amendment is intended to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness within the sector.

Turay further explained that the agreement provides for the establishment of a specialised agency to support the development of the transportation sector both domestically and internationally.

Concluding the debate, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma, said the ratification would position Sierra Leone to strengthen its transport systems and align with international best practices. He also underscored the importance of maintaining quorum in parliamentary decision-making.

In his closing remarks, the Minister expressed appreciation to Parliament for ratifying the agreement, adding that more agreements and bills would be presented for consideration in due course.
