The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) has announced major progress in the construction and testing of a modern elevator system at its headquarters on Tower Hill in Freetown, marking a major step toward improving accessibility within the institution.
According to an official project update issued on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the installation has reached an advanced stage, signaling the Commission’s continued commitment to inclusivity and equal access for all citizens. The development forms part of ECSL’s broader effort to translate its Disability Policy into practical infrastructure that benefits both staff and visitors.
The Commission stated that the elevator project directly addresses long-standing challenges associated with navigating the multi-storey building, particularly for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs). For years, mobility within the headquarters has posed difficulties for individuals with physical limitations, a concern the new system is designed to resolve.
ECSL emphasized that the initiative is not only about infrastructure but also about institutional values. By prioritizing accessibility, the Commission aims to foster an environment that is inclusive, responsive, and citizen-focused. The near-completion of the elevator underscores its intention to ensure that all individuals, regardless of physical ability, can access its services without barriers.
The update further highlights that the project represents a tangible outcome of policy implementation, demonstrating ECSL’s commitment to aligning its operational practices with its stated principles on disability inclusion.
Once fully operational, the elevator is expected to significantly improve movement within the building, enhancing both efficiency and dignity for users. ECSL reaffirmed that such efforts are part of its ongoing mission to build a more inclusive public institution that serves the needs of every citizen.
