Bonthe District has emerged as the overall winner of the inaugural National Canoe Championship organized by the Sierra Leone Canoe Federation, marking a significant milestone in the promotion of water sports in the country.
The competition, held at Lumley Beach in Freetown, brought together participants from eight different communities. The event is part of ongoing efforts to develop canoeing and identify promising athletes for both national and international representation.
According to the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation, Federation President Abdul Karim Koroma Junior stated that the initiative is designed to scout emerging talent while also strengthening the skills of athletes through structured training programmes.
Bonthe secured first place in the competition, outperforming strong contenders Mama Beach, which finished second, and Black Johnson, which placed third. Their victory underscores the district’s growing presence in competitive water sports.
The federation has indicated that it plans to build on the success of the championship by expanding opportunities for young people across the country to participate in canoeing and other water-based sporting activities.
The event represents a key step in developing a national pipeline of athletes capable of competing at higher levels, while also encouraging community engagement in sports along Sierra Leone’s coastal areas.
