The Sierra Leone Police have successfully mediated a peace agreement between residents of Brima Lane and Grassfield following tensions that erupted after a local football final earlier this week.

The intervention was led by the Regional Police Commander for Freetown-East, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Brima Kanneh, who convened a peace meeting on Wednesday, bringing together key representatives from both communities.

The dispute stemmed from an incident on Monday, April 27, after Grassfield FC defeated Brima Lane FC in a football competition sponsored by 1xBet. The outcome of the match reportedly triggered unrest between supporters of the two communities.

During the meeting, representatives from Brima Lane and Grassfield gave consistent accounts of the events leading to the disturbances. Both sides commended the Sierra Leone Police for what they described as a prompt and professional response that helped de-escalate tensions and prevent further violence.

Community members also called for continued collaboration with the police and urged residents to exercise restraint in order to maintain peace and security.

Speaking on behalf of Brima Lane, Chief Pa Alimamy Turay confirmed that both communities had resolved their differences and expressed commitment to peaceful coexistence. He further disclosed plans for a joint peace engagement between the two communities, highlighting the long-standing familial ties that connect them.

In his address, AIG Kanneh emphasized the shared history and interconnectedness of Brima Lane and Grassfield, stressing the importance of unity and mutual respect. He reassured residents of the police’s ongoing commitment to maintaining law and order and extended an apology on behalf of his personnel in relation to the incident.

As part of efforts to restore confidence, AIG Kanneh also ordered the release of all individuals who had been arrested in connection with the disturbances, allowing them to reunite with their families.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both communities unanimously agreeing to uphold the peace agreement and work together to sustain harmony and prevent future conflicts.
