The National Publicity Secretary of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Moses Mambu, has stated that the party will adopt a fully democratic process in selecting its next presidential flagbearer ahead of the 2028 elections.
Speaking on the party’s internal arrangements, Mambu said the SLPP operates a more inclusive system compared to the opposition All People’s Congress (APC), which he alleged has a history of handpicking candidates without broad-based internal support.
He referenced remarks made by President Julius Maada Bio during the party’s 75th anniversary celebrations, indicating that the next SLPP presidential candidate will emerge through a transparent and competitive electoral process.
According to Mambu, all qualified delegates will participate in the selection process, including President Bio, while dismissing suggestions that the President would impose a preferred successor.
“President Bio is not going to choose who he wants. He will not say this is my wife, my friend, or my associate, and impose that person on the party,” Mambu said. “The process will be democratic, and the delegates will decide.”
He further noted that the party is focused on selecting a candidate capable of promoting unity, peace, and stability within the SLPP and the country at large.
Mambu expressed confidence that the process will strengthen the party ahead of the 2028 elections, adding that the SLPP aims to continue consolidating its political dominance.
He concluded that the party’s approach would reflect the will of its membership, ensuring that the eventual flagbearer enjoys broad-based internal support.
