Sierra Leone participated in the 12th Africa Regional Forum for Sustainable Development (ARFSD), held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) conference hall from 28th to 30th April 2026.

The forum brought together about 1,500 participants from 48 African countries to deliberate on transformation and coordinated actions toward the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Africa’s Agenda 2063.

Speaking at the forum, Mohamed I. Kutubu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Political Affairs, said the discussions focused on assessing the level of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063.

He explained that the aim of the forum was to align the SDGs, which are expected to end in 2030, with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision of “The Africa We Want.”

“The objective is to assess what has been achieved so far in implementing the SDGs alongside Agenda 2063. With the SDGs approaching their 2030 deadline in less than five years, this forum provides an opportunity to review progress and strengthen coordination for the remaining years,” Kutubu stated.

He further noted that Sierra Leone, as a member of the African Union and an active implementer of the SDGs, has benefited significantly from various development initiatives and has actively participated in continental assessment processes.

During the forum, the Deputy Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Sajor Aziz Kamara, made a presentation on behalf of Sierra Leone, highlighting progress in the education sector, particularly under the government’s flagship Free Quality Education Programme, which aligns with SDG 4 on quality education.

Other members of the Sierra Leone delegation also participated in various panel discussions. Suleiman Phoray Musa, Director of the Public Service Reform Unit (PSRU), contributed to discussions on governance reforms and their linkages to the SDGs and Agenda 2063.

Ambassador Imran Kanu, Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Permanent Secretary Mohamed I. Kutubu also took part in discussions focusing on education and development outcomes across the continent.

The Sierra Leone delegation was led by Deputy Minister Sajor Aziz Kamara and included Ambassador Imran Kanu, Permanent Secretary Mohamed I. Kutubu, and PSRU Director Suleiman Phoray Musa.

The 12th ARFSD follows the 11th edition held in Uganda. This year’s forum was chaired by a representative from Mauritius, in Southern Africa.
