Police in Sierra Leone on Thursday, May 8, 2026, carried out a demolition exercise along the Rokel-Waterloo Highway following a deadly container accident that reportedly killed six people a day earlier.
The police action took place at the same location where the fatal accident occurred on Wednesday, May 7, 2026, in an area widely known for heavy congestion, roadside business activities and constant pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
According to reports, the accident involved a container vehicle and resulted in the deaths of six people. The incident reportedly happened in a busy commercial section of the highway where traders, transport operators and pedestrians frequently occupy spaces close to the road.
Following the tragedy, police officers moved into the area on Friday, May 8, and began demolishing business structures situated along the roadside. Several temporary shops and structures used for commercial activities were removed during the operation.
The demolition exercise is believed to be part of efforts by the police to address congestion and improve safety along the highway after the deadly incident. The affected area has for years experienced heavy traffic congestion due to the concentration of roadside businesses, commercial transport activities and pedestrian movement.
Business operators and residents in the area watched as structures were pulled down by authorities during the crackdown. Some traders were also seen removing goods and salvaging materials from affected structures while the operation continued.
Police authorities have not yet issued a detailed official statement regarding the demolition exercise, but the operation has generated public discussion over road safety concerns and the increasing presence of roadside structures along major highways.
