The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources, has successfully concluded the 2026 Mines and Minerals Week after three days of discussions focused on transparency, responsible mining, and improving benefits for mining communities.
The event, held at the Bintumani International Conference Centre, brought together chief executive officers of major mining companies, senior government officials, industry stakeholders, and development partners to discuss key issues affecting the country’s extractive sector.
A major focus of the week-long engagement was the implementation of the Mines and Minerals Act, particularly issues surrounding the Community Development Fund (CDF), transparency in revenue management, and strengthening benefits for host communities affected by mining operations.
Speaking during the event, Julius Daniel Mattai officially launched the Community Development Management Information System (CoDMIS), a digital platform designed to improve transparency and accountability in the management of mining-related revenues.
According to the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources, the CoDMIS platform will allow members of the public to track payments made to communities, including surface rent and other mining-related benefits.
Authorities say the system is expected to strengthen public confidence by providing easier access to information on how mining revenues are distributed and managed.
Stakeholders at the conference described the initiative as an important step toward promoting accountability and ensuring that communities directly benefit from the country’s mineral resources.
Throughout the three-day event, participants engaged in extensive panel discussions on responsible mining practices, value addition within the mining sector, and strategies aimed at achieving shared prosperity through the sustainable management of Sierra Leone’s natural resources.
As the 2026 Mines and Minerals Week came to a close, government officials and industry stakeholders praised the gathering as a significant platform for dialogue and collaboration in advancing reforms within the extractive industry.
The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources said the event reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening transparency, improving community participation, and promoting responsible investment in Sierra Leone’s mining sector.
