The President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, Adama Tuma Gento Kamara, has called on her opponent, Martina Baindu Egbenda Esq., to resign from her position as Registrar General and face her directly in the contest for the Bar Association’s leadership.
In a television interview, Kamara said: “I want my opponent to boldly resign her political appointment and face me head on.”
Speaking during an appearance on Liberty Online TV, Kamara argued that maintaining a government appointment while vying for the Bar’s leadership creates an ethical conflict and a double standard within the electoral process. She noted that her own previous political involvement faced intense scrutiny from opponents, despite holding only a non-executive board position.
“I call on all meaningful Sierra Leoneans at the Bar and all her supporters, in the interest of the organisation, for my opponent to boldly resign and come into the race to take me head-on,” she stated.
Kamara characterised the situation as a matter of principle rather than a personal dispute, warning that allowing a government appointee to lead the Bar could set a concerning precedent for institutional independence.
“Hypocrisy stinks and it is at its peak,” she added, criticising what she perceives as inconsistent standards regarding eligibility.
Egbenda continues to serve as Registrar General.
The comment comes just a few days after the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) postponed its Annual General Meeting, originally set for June 5 and 6, 2026.
The postponement, announced on June 1, 2026, was due to “logistical and other challenges beyond the control of the Directors,” according to a notice from the association.
