The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education has held a series of strategic engagements aimed at strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) systems across Sierra Leone.
The meetings brought together international partners, industry representatives, and government officials to discuss ways of aligning skills training with labour market needs, improving industry linkages, and supporting job creation through vocational education.
A delegation from the BIO VET Project, made up of European agricultural and vocational education experts, met with Ministry officials and representatives of the Sierra Leone Chamber for Agribusiness Development (SLeCAD). Discussions focused on modernising TVET curricula, integrating entrepreneurship and practical learning, and enhancing collaboration between training institutions and the agribusiness sector.
The BIO VET team shared experiences from Europe on integrating applied learning and innovation into vocational training systems. Areas identified for possible collaboration include curriculum development, staff exchanges, research partnerships, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises in the agribusiness sector.
In a separate engagement, a delegation led by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China discussed plans to upgrade an existing technical institute into a Centre of Excellence in Agriculture. The proposed centre is expected to support skills development in the agricultural sector by linking training, production, and market opportunities.
Participants also reviewed international models for Centres of Excellence, with emphasis on combining practical training, research, and industry partnerships to improve graduate employability and entrepreneurship.
The Ministry said the engagements form part of ongoing efforts to reform TVET systems and strengthen skills development across the country. Proposed next steps include exploring joint curriculum development, formalising exchange programmes, and advancing plans for the proposed Centre of Excellence and related training institutions.
