The Chief Electoral Commissioner (CEC) and Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Mr Edmond Sylvester Alpha, along with other members of the Commission, have paid a courtesy call on the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay Esq., at his office at the Guma Building on Lamina Sankoh Street in Freetown.
During the meeting, Mr Alpha underscored the critical importance of electoral legal reforms, noting that the enactment and effective implementation of progressive laws form the foundation for the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections.
He informed the Attorney General of the Commission’s intention to commence a comprehensive Electoral Legal Reforms process, which will involve the review and revision of the country’s electoral legal framework, including the Public Elections Act, 2022.
The Chairman further outlined a proposed timeline for the reform exercise, indicating that the process is scheduled to begin in June and conclude in December 2026.
In his response, Attorney General Alpha Sesay Esq. welcomed the delegation and assured the Commission of his full professional support and commitment. He emphasised that credible elections can only be achieved within a robust and progressive legal framework, pledging his office’s readiness to assist in strengthening the country’s electoral laws.
Both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting electoral justice, transparency, and public trust through the development of a sound legal framework. They also agreed to maintain close collaboration in the execution of their respective constitutional responsibilities.
The meeting marks a significant step toward enhancing Sierra Leone’s electoral system through legal and institutional reforms.
