The Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, through the National Land Commission (NLC), has officially launched the Customary Land Registration (CLR) process in the Bekeh Loko Chiefdom, Port Loko District.

The historic initiative commenced with a high-level Chiefdom Entry and Stakeholder Engagement Event at the Paramount Chief’s Court, signaling a new era of transparent and structured land administration in the Port Loko District.

The Ministry’s rollout brought together a diverse coalition of local and national leaders, including the Paramount Chief, section and village chiefs, landowners, youth and women representatives, and members of the local Land Committee.

Representatives from the National Land Commission (NLC), the Sierra Leone Land Administration Project (SLLAP), and Medici Land Governance (MLG) delivered presentations outlining the CLR process, its objectives, timeline, and stakeholder responsibilities.

During the ceremony, field teams were introduced, and community members were informed about what to expect during registration.

A key highlight was the signing of the Chiefdom Consent Form by the Paramount Chief, formally approving the NLC and its partners to undertake CLR activities in Bekeh Loko Chiefdom.

The session also included mapping of approximate chiefdom and section boundaries, followed by an interactive Question & Answer (Q&A) session.

The Chiefdom Entry marks the official start of CLR field activities across four targeted sections: Falaba, Kondato, Sendugu, and Sanda, demonstrating strong commitment from traditional authorities and community members to a transparent, inclusive, and participatory land registration process.

The Ministry believes that this rollout in Bekeh Loko Chiefdom serves as a critical blueprint for their ongoing national campaign to register all customary lands, bridging the gap between traditional custody and modern legal protection.
