The Freetown City Council (FCC) on Saturday supported a youth-led climate initiative spearheaded by Youth Initiative for Climate Action (YICA), reaffirming its commitment to empowering young people in the fight against climate change.
YICA organised an orientation session for 20 participants drawn from the second cohort of its Young Women Climate Mentorship Programme. The initiative is designed to equip young women with the knowledge, skills, and leadership capacity needed to actively contribute to climate action efforts within their communities.
The programme aligns closely with FCC’s broader strategy of engaging and empowering young people to address the growing climate crisis, particularly by promoting inclusive participation in environmental decision-making.
By investing in the leadership potential of young women, the partnership aims to strengthen inclusive climate action and position future generations at the forefront of building resilient communities.
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr expressed her pride in the participants and commended the initiative for its impact. She also extended her appreciation to FCC’s Youth Engagement Manager, Sallieu Kanu, for his dedication and valuable contributions toward advancing youth participation in climate action.
“I am proud of each of these young women,” she said, highlighting the importance of nurturing female leadership in climate advocacy.
The Young Women Climate Mentorship Programme continues to serve as a platform for inspiring and empowering the next generation of climate leaders in Sierra Leone.
