A Sierra Leonean national, Charnor Barrie, has publicly shared his experience of living as an LGBTQ+ individual in Freetown, describing the challenges he faced in expressing his identity in his home country and the sense of freedom he now feels while residing in the Netherlands.
Barrie made the statement during a Pride celebration in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, where he joined thousands of participants to commemorate diversity, inclusion, and equal rights.
Accompanied by a photograph taken at the event, he reflected on his personal journey and the difficulties he says he encountered due to societal attitudes toward LGBTQ+ individuals.

According to his social media post, Barrie stated that living openly as an LGBTQ+ person in Sierra Leone was marked by fear, silence, and concerns about social judgment. He expressed that relocating to the Netherlands has given him an opportunity to live more openly and confidently.
”For the first time, I feel free to live as who I truly am,” he wrote, adding that he can now share his happiness without fear.
The post has generated discussion on social media, with supporters praising his courage in sharing his story, while others have engaged in broader debates about human rights, inclusion, cultural values, and the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in different societies.
The Netherlands is widely recognized for its legal protections and support for LGBTQ+ rights and regularly hosts Pride events that attract participants from around the world. Such events serve as platforms for advocacy, visibility, and conversations about equality and acceptance.
