The Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (SMEDA) has engaged small and medium-scale business owners in Port Loko in a sensitization on climate resilience entrepreneurship, and sustainable business practices as part of activities marking World Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day 2026.
The event, held on Sunday, June 21, at the New Auditorium of Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), brought together market women, farmers, students, local council representatives, entertainers, and other community stakeholders. The programme was held under the theme: “SMEs for Climate Action and Resilience.”
Speaking at the event, SMEDA Chief Executive Officer, Sheka Samuel Sannoh, highlighted the role of entrepreneurs in national economic development. He encouraged business owners to incorporate climate-conscious practices into their operations to enhance sustainability and resilience.
Mohamed Fofanah, an Agricultural Instructor at the Ministry of Agriculture, expressed concern about environmental management within communities. He noted that many residents do not pay adequate attention to environmental protection and urged community members to plant and care for trees in their surroundings.
“We don’t take good care of our environment,” Fofanah said, while calling on residents to contribute to environmental conservation efforts.
A representative of the Traders union of Kondato market outlined some of the challenges affecting local businesses, including inadequate storage facilities, unreliable electricity supply, and losses resulting from damaged goods.
Also addressing participants, Dr. Patrick Komawa of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security encouraged small business owners to seek available support from relevant institutions.
He advised traders and entrepreneurs to channel their concerns through organizations such as the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA), local councils, and the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), for possible assistance.
Participants were informed about services available through SMEDA to support climate-resilient entrepreneurship and business development. Several attendees described the engagement as timely and informative, noting that it provided useful knowledge on business sustainability and environmental responsibility.
