Justice Andrew S.C. Johnson of the High Court of Sierra Leone in Freetown has sentenced Isha Munu to thirty years imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to drug-related offences involving 980 wraps of Cannabis Sativa.
The convicted defendant was before the court on two counts: unlawful possession of drugs contrary to Section 8(a) of the National Drugs Control Act, 2008 (Act No. 10 of 2008), and dealing in a prohibited drug contrary to Section 7(c) of the National Drugs Control Act, 2008.
According to the particulars of offence, on 21 December 2025, at Mount Aureol in Freetown, the defendant was found in possession of 980 wraps of Cannabis Sativa weighing 600.5 grams without lawful authority.
During sentencing proceedings, defence counsel M.Y. Conteh pleaded for leniency on behalf of the convicted defendant.
Counsel informed the court that the defendant had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, demonstrating remorse and saving the court’s valuable time. He further submitted that she is a single mother of three children and their sole breadwinner. Counsel also noted that she is a first time offender and urged the court to temper justice with mercy.
Delivering judgment on 15 June 2026, Justice Johnson accepted the defendant’s guilty plea and convicted her accordingly. The judge stated that although the guilty plea had saved the court’s time, unlawful possession and dealing in prohibited drugs remain serious offences that the courts must continue to discourage.
The court sentenced Isha Munu to five years imprisonment on count one and thirty years imprisonment on count two. The sentences are to run concurrently and take effect from the date of her remand in custody.
A.I. Kamara prosecuted the matter on behalf of the State.
