Presidential Press Secretary Yusuf Keketoma Sandi has stated that the Government of President Julius Maada Bio has constructed 23 bridges across Sierra Leone since 2018, surpassing the number built during the 11-year tenure of the previous All People’s Congress (APC) administration.
In a social media post on 20th June 2026, following the commissioning of the Manowa Bridge in Kailahun District, Mr. Sandi asserted that the current administration has delivered more bridge infrastructure in eight years than its predecessor did in eleven.
“In just 8 years, President Bio has constructed more bridges than the APC did in 11 years,” Mr. Sandi wrote.
The Press Secretary listed the 23 bridges by name and location, including the recently commissioned Manowa Bridge in Kailahun, the Sewa Bridge in Bo, the Atlantic-Juba Bridge in Freetown, and the Sengbe Pieh Bridge, also in Freetown. Other bridges span districts including Pujehun, Moyamba, Bonthe, Bombali, Port Loko, and Kenema.
The Manowa Bridge, a two-lane structure over the Moa River, was formally commissioned by President Bio on 20th June 2026. Constructed under the World Bank-supported Smallholder Commercialisation and Agribusiness Development Project (SCADeP), the bridge replaces a long-standing manual cable ferry that had served communities in the region since independence.
During the ceremony, President Bio emphasized his administration’s commitment to connecting isolated communities and improving daily life.
“This bridge is a declaration that no Sierra Leonean should be disadvantaged because of where they live,” President Bio stated.
The project aims to reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and provide farmers with safer, all-weather access to markets.
According to World Bank Country Manager Abdu Muwonge, the new bridge is expected to help regional farmers generate an estimated annual agricultural turnover of over US$7 million.
The 24 bridges highlighted by the Press Secretary span multiple districts, reflecting a nationwide push to replace manual ferry crossings and upgrade road networks.
The extensive list of completed infrastructure includes:
Pujehun District: Jewela, Makibie, Gorma, Masau, Makemu, Maseniaa, Mapui, Moa, and Waanje Bridges.
Kailahun District: Manowa, Lalehun, and Jujioma Bridges.
Moyamba District: Mogorvie, Moyamba, and Kpangbama Bridges.
Freetown: Sengbe Pieh, Atlantic-Juba, and Old School Bridges.
Port Loko District: Kobolo-Gulama (formerly Mabang) and PC Adikali Modu II (formerly Rogbere) Bridges.
Other Districts: Gendema Bridge (Kenema), Mattru Bridge (Bonthe), Lohindi Bridge (Bombali), and Sewa Bridge (Bo).
According to the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA), the Government has overseen the construction or rehabilitation of over 56 bridges between 2018 and 2025, including 18 major bridges critical to the national transportation network. The infrastructure drive has been financed through a combination of government counterpart funding and support from development partners.
The SLRA further disclosed that 442.86 kilometres of roads have been constructed or rehabilitated during the same period
