The British High Commission in Sierra Leone on Thursday, 25th June 2026, hosted a farewell reception for Team Sierra Leone ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23rd July to 2nd August.
The event brought together athletes, government officials, sports administrators, and development partners in a show of support and encouragement for the national delegation as they prepare to represent Sierra Leone on the global stage.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the British High Commissioner, Alexandra Maclean, officials highlighted the significance of the Games and commended the dedication of athletes who have earned their places through years of sacrifice and discipline. She noted that the athletes carry not only the national flag but also the hopes of their families and young people aspiring to follow in their footsteps.
She assured Team Sierra Leone of the High Commission’s support, expressing pride in their participation and confidence in their ability to perform at the highest level.
The President of the Commonwealth Games Association of Sierra Leone, Prince Vandy Suallay, expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a reflection of strong cooperation between his institution and the British High Commission. He noted that Sierra Leone is participating in the Games for the third time and highlighted improved preparation compared to previous editions.

He outlined the country’s representation across multiple disciplines, including boxing, judo, swimming, cycling, and track and field events such as long jump, triple jump, and hurdling, with athletes based in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Dubai. He expressed confidence in the team’s readiness and praised the collective effort behind their preparation.
The Executive Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mohamed Alphaka Conteh, emphasized government commitment to supporting athletes and strengthening sports development. He underscored the importance of unity, trust, and long-standing partnerships in advancing national sporting ambitions and assured continued institutional support.
Minister of Sports, Augusta James-Teima, urged the athletes to remain disciplined, focused, and committed as they prepare for competition, while expressing appreciation for all partners contributing to their preparation. She also conveyed greetings from President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, noting his pride in the national team.

She further acknowledged the National Olympic Committee for its support and called for continued collaboration among stakeholders in advancing Sierra Leone’s sporting ambitions.
The reception also featured panel discussions centred on inclusion in sports, with emphasis on the participation of persons with disability and the empowerment of women in athletics, highlighting sport as a tool for social change.

Team Sierra Leone athletes expressed gratitude for the send-off and pledged to represent the country with pride, determination, and excellence at the Games.
The ceremony concluded with renewed commitments from all partners to support inclusive sports development and ensure strong national performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, which is hosting the multi-sport event for the first time since 2014.
