The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC), Executive Secretary, Madam Hawa Sally Samai has urged Sierra Leoneans, especially politicians to uphold national peace. Samai was speaking at the Symposium on Governance Experience Exchange commemorating the 105th anniversary of the Communist Party of China and the 55th anniversary of the China-Sierra Leone Friendship at the Chinese Embassy on Spur Loop in Freetown.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary emphasised that while every country’s path is different, there is value in adapting good practices to fit Sierra Leone’s own context.

Drawing from her own experience in China, she spoke about three things that stood out including social cohesion, collective responsibility, and a shared national vision.

“One of the key lessons from China is the commitment of its people and institutions to work together towards common national goals,” she said. “As a small country, Sierra Leone can still make a meaningful contribution to regional and global development. By learning from international best practices and working together around a shared national agenda, we can build a stronger, more peaceful, and more cohesive nation”.

She encouraged Sierra Leoneans to embrace collaboration, broaden perspectives through international exchange, and focus on solutions that strengthen peace, unity, and national development.

The symposium brought together representatives from the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), All People’s Congress (APC), Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, and other institutions. Those who have undertaken study visits to China shared firsthand lessons from China’s governance institutions and development journey.

The symposium reaffirmed that partnerships, dialogue, and knowledge exchange are critical to advancing good governance and sustaining peace.
