The Secretary General of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and Deputy Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has called on party members to demonstrate greater commitment and unity as the party officially inaugurated its Canada Region, describing the new regional structure as an important step in strengthening the SLPP’s global presence ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Addressing party supporters during the inauguration ceremony, Koroma urged members to remain steadfast in promoting the party’s core values of inclusive governance, national development, and democratic consolidation. He stressed that loyalty, discipline, and collective responsibility would be essential in maintaining the party’s strength and advancing its political agenda.

Koroma encouraged supporters to continue working together in support of the SLPP, stressing that sustained commitment from members at home and abroad would be vital in achieving the party’s objectives.

The SLPP Secretary General also paid tribute to members of the Sierra Leonean diaspora for their continued contributions to the party. He acknowledged the financial, logistical, and moral support provided by overseas supporters, noting that their engagement has helped strengthen the party’s activities and outreach beyond Sierra Leone’s borders.

Highlighting the achievements of the administration of President Julius Maada Bio, Koroma pointed to governance reforms, investments in human capital development, and the expansion of infrastructure as key accomplishments of the government. He said these initiatives reflect the SLPP’s commitment to improving the lives of Sierra Leoneans and promoting sustainable national development.

Looking ahead, Koroma expressed confidence that the ruling party is well-positioned for the next electoral cycle. He assured supporters that the SLPP is fully prepared for the 2028 general elections, adding that ongoing party organisation and grassroots mobilisation, both within Sierra Leone and across the diaspora, would strengthen its electoral prospects.

The inauguration of the SLPP Canada Region shows the growing role of Sierra Leone’s diaspora in the country’s political landscape. Beyond providing financial support, diaspora communities contribute policy ideas, professional expertise, advocacy, and international networks that influence national development and political engagement. As political parties continue to expand their overseas structures, the participation of Sierra Leoneans living abroad is increasingly viewed as an important factor in shaping political discourse, mobilising support, and contributing to the country’s democratic process.

The inauguration was also attended by the First Lady, Fatima Bio.
