The Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha, is leading the country’s delegation to the 10th Annual Continental Forum of Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and the General Assembly of the Association of African Electoral Authorities (AAEA), taking place from 6 to 8 July 2026 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

According to information from the Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Cairo, the delegation was received by embassy officials on Sunday, 5 July 2026, ahead of the commencement of the continental meeting.

The Sierra Leone delegation comprises Chief Electoral Commissioner and National Returning Officer, Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha, and the ECSL Director of External Relations, Albert Massaquoi, Esq. Their participation follows an invitation extended by the African Union Commission (AUC).

The forum is jointly organised by the African Union Commission’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (DPAPS) in collaboration with the Association of African Electoral Authorities and is hosted by Egypt’s National Elections Authority. This year’s discussions are being held under the theme, “Diaspora (Residents Abroad) Voting: Progress, Gaps and Prospects.”

The annual gathering brings together election management bodies and senior electoral officials from across Africa to exchange experiences, share best practices, and explore policy approaches aimed at strengthening credible, peaceful, and democratic electoral processes across the continent.

Speaking ahead of the forum, ECSL Director of External Relations, Albert Massaquoi, Esq., said Sierra Leone’s participation reflects the Commission’s commitment to promoting electoral excellence, strengthening institutional capacity, and contributing to continental efforts to advance democratic governance.

The Sierra Leone delegation is expected to actively participate in the forum’s deliberations and the AAEA General Assembly as part of broader efforts to support transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral systems across Africa.
