A commercial bike rider in Blama Town, Small Bo Chiefdom, Kenema District, has lost a finger following a reported violent confrontation involving police officers.
The incident happened on July 8, 2026, during a reported police operation to tackle illegal drugs in the area. According to a statement issued by the Kenema District Executive of the Sierra Leone Commercial Bike Riders Union on July 9, the rider, identified as Sheku Lahai, sustained a serious injury after an officer allegedly bit his finger, causing him to lose it.
The Union has called for a full investigation into the incident, saying the actions of the officers involved were unacceptable and did not reflect the professional standards expected of law enforcement officers.
While supporting efforts by the police to address illegal drug activities, the Union said such operations must be carried out with respect for the rights and dignity of citizens.
The Union also praised local authorities, including police officials and leaders of the Blama and Kenema District Bike Riders Union, for their intervention in calming the situation and preventing further escalation.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peaceful relations between commercial bike riders and security forces, while urging all parties to use dialogue and lawful means to resolve conflicts.
