Jude Bellingham scored twice as England came from behind to beat Norway 2-1 after extra time and book their place in the World Cup semi-finals.
The Real Madrid midfielder cancelled out Andreas Schjelderup’s 36th-minute opener deep into first-half stoppage time, before completing his brace in the third minute of extra time to send Thomas Tuchel’s side through.
England will face either defending champions Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-finals on 15 July at Atlanta Stadium.
Norway, playing in their first-ever World Cup quarter-final, exit the tournament with immense pride after a historic run that included a famous victory over Brazil in the Round of 16 .
In stifling Miami heat, England dominated possession from the opening whistle, controlling over 70% of the ball in the first half. Norway sat deep, defended resolutely, and waited for opportunities to counter-attack.
Harry Kane had a free-kick that sailed over the crossbar in the 29th minute as England struggled to break down a disciplined Norwegian defence. The Scandinavians grew into the game, and Haaland had his first shot on goal in the 35th minute, heading straight at Jordan Pickford.
Just one minute later, Norway stunned England. Martin Ødegaard found Andreas Schjelderup on the left flank, and the young forward cut inside before curling a brilliant shot that hit the far post and nestled into the net. It was a goal of supreme quality that left Pickford helpless.
England responded before the break. In first-half stoppage time, Anthony Gordon drove down the left wing and found Bellingham, who weaved his way past two defenders before hammering home a left-footed finish to level the scores at 1-1. Harry Kane had the ball in the net moments later, but the goal was ruled out for offside .
Norway thought they had restored their lead in the 55th minute when Torbjorn Heggem scored from a scramble following a corner kick. But after a VAR review, referee François Letexier ruled that Erling Haaland had fouled Elliot Anderson in the build-up, and the goal was disallowed.
Norway continued to threaten. Kristoffer Ajer headed against the crossbar in the 76th minute, with Ezri Konsa somehow preventing Sander Berge from heading into the empty net on the rebound. Djed Spence almost capitalised on Nyland’s hurried clearance as a tense contest went to extra time.
Tuchel made a decisive substitution, bringing on Morgan Rogers with the intention of finding a goal rather than waiting for penalties. The decision paid off just three minutes into extra time.
In the 93rd minute, Rogers unleashed a fierce long-range strike. Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland could not hold it, parrying the ball into Bellingham’s path. The Real Madrid star reacted quickest, stabbing home from six yards to complete his brace.
England survived a late penalty scare when Spence was brought down by Oscar Bobb in the box, but after a VAR check, the decision was overturned. Norway pushed forward desperately, but England held on to secure the victory.
