The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and community stakeholders, has commenced a large-scale environmental clean-up campaign across Lungi Township as preparations intensify for the forthcoming ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government.

The exercise focused on improving sanitation, strengthening public safety, and enhancing the appearance of key locations expected to receive regional delegates during the summit.

More than 150 Sierra Leone Police recruits were deployed to support the operation, carrying out cleaning activities at the Freetown International Airport and other strategic areas within the township.

The recruits were received by the Local Unit Commander of the Lungi Police Division, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Augustine Momoh Kamara, and the Local Unit Commander of the Anvil/Airport Police Division, CSP Mohamed Kugba Allieu, who are jointly coordinating the exercise.

Personnel from the RSLAF worked alongside police officers and members of the local community to clear overgrown vegetation, remove refuse, sweep streets, clean drainage systems, and sanitise public spaces in and around Lungi.

The joint operation reflects the continued collaboration between the security forces and local stakeholders to ensure the host community is adequately prepared for the high-level regional gathering.

Speaking during the exercise, the police commanders commended the recruits, military personnel, and community members for their commitment and teamwork.

They emphasised that maintaining a clean environment is essential for protecting public health, promoting security, and presenting a positive image of Sierra Leone to visiting heads of state and other international delegates.

The commanders reaffirmed the commitment of the Sierra Leone Police and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces to working with partner institutions and local communities to provide a safe, clean, and welcoming environment throughout the ECOWAS Summit.
