The All People’s Congress (APC) has welcomed the Government’s decision to discontinue the criminal proceedings against former President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, describing the move as a significant milestone for national healing, reconciliation, and lasting peace.

The case stemmed from the failed coup attempt of November 26, 2023, when gunmen attacked military barracks and prisons in Freetown, leading to the escape of nearly 2,000 inmates and approximately 20 fatalities. Koroma was subsequently charged with treason and misprision of treason for his alleged involvement in the plot. He consistently denied the allegations. In January 2024, he was granted medical bail to seek treatment in Nigeria, where he has remained while the case was pending before the courts. Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay formally discontinued the proceedings on July 14, 2026, under Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act 2024.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the party said the decision marks “an important step towards healing the nation, strengthening national unity, promoting reconciliation, and consolidating peace.”

The APC expressed appreciation for the development, stating that it offers an opportunity for Sierra Leoneans to continue fostering dialogue, mutual understanding, and national cohesion.

The party called on its members, supporters, and sympathisers across the country to celebrate the announcement peacefully and responsibly, urging them to conduct themselves with dignity while respecting the rule of law.

According to the statement, the APC remains committed to promoting peace, unity, and democratic governance, emphasising that the country’s progress depends on collective efforts to strengthen national stability and development.

The party also expressed anticipation for the return of former President Koroma to Sierra Leone, noting that it looks forward to welcoming him home following the conclusion of the legal proceedings.

Reaffirming its commitment to the country’s democratic future, the APC said it will continue to engage constructively with all stakeholders in support of peace, democracy, national unity, and sustainable development.

The statement concluded with a renewed appeal for calm and solidarity among party members, stressing that the latest development should serve as a catalyst for reconciliation and the continued advancement of Sierra Leone’s democratic process.
