Dr Ibrahim Bangura, a flagbearer aspirant of the All People’s Congress (APC), has called for reconciliation and national unity between President Julius Maada Bio and former President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma following the Government of Sierra Leone’s decision to discontinue the criminal proceedings against the former Head of State.
Speaking in a video message after the announcement, Dr Bangura described the development as an opportunity for Sierra Leone to move beyond political divisions and strengthen national cohesion.
He urged President Bio and former President Koroma to embrace one another and work together in the best interest of the country, stressing that national development should take precedence over partisan politics.
“This is not about political parties; it is about the interests of Sierra Leone and its people,” Dr Bangura said, emphasising the need for leaders to demonstrate statesmanship and foster an atmosphere of peace and cooperation.
The APC flagbearer aspirant also raised concerns about the growing political divisions and affiliations that continue to polarise the country. He called on Sierra Leoneans to reject politics of division and instead promote unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.
According to Dr Bangura, sustainable peace and national progress can only be achieved when political leaders and citizens alike place the country’s interests above individual or party considerations.
He noted that the discontinuation of the case against former President Koroma presents an opportunity for reconciliation and renewed national dialogue, urging all stakeholders to seize the moment to strengthen democracy, preserve peace, and advance the collective aspirations of the Sierra Leonean people.
