The Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) has commended the Government of Sierra Leone for ratifying the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, describing the move as a major milestone in advancing justice, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 16 July 2026, CHRDI said the ratification demonstrates Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law and aligning with regional human rights standards.

The organisation noted that the decision creates an opportunity for greater accountability by allowing human rights protections to extend beyond national borders through the African human rights system.

CHRDI described the development as a landmark achievement for democracy and human rights in Sierra Leone, adding that it provides civil society organisations with a stronger legal and institutional framework to advocate for justice, defend vulnerable communities, document abuses, support victims, and push for reforms.

According to CHRDI, the ratification will reinforce advocacy efforts around recognised African human rights standards, strengthen public accountability, and promote transparency, dignity, and access to justice for all citizens.

The organisation further stated that the move signals the Government’s willingness to be assessed against continental human rights obligations, creating a more enabling environment for advocacy and reform.

“CHRDI commends the Government of Sierra Leone for taking this commendable step to promote and protect citizens’ rights. The ratification of this Protocol is not only a legal act; it is a public affirmation that human dignity, justice, and accountability must remain central to governance in Sierra Leone,” CHRDI stated.

The rights group urged the government to build on the progress by ensuring full implementation of its human rights obligations and expanding access to justice, particularly for poor, vulnerable, and marginalised groups.

CHRDI also called on government institutions, civil society organisations, the legal community, development partners, and citizens to transform the milestone into practical action by improving human rights awareness, strengthening democratic accountability, and ensuring the protection of citizens’ freedoms.

The Campaign for Human Rights and Development International is a civil society organisation focused on social and public policy advocacy, promoting human rights, democratic governance, justice, and citizens’ freedoms in Sierra Leone and beyond.
