Female politician and political analyst, who is vying for the flagbearer position of the main opposition All People’s Congress APC, Sylvia Olayinka Biyden, has warned President Julius Maada Bio of risking his signature being overturned by the Supreme Court if he assents to the recently passed Constitutional Amendment Bill in Parliament.

If President Bio signs the purportedly passed Constitutional Amendment Bill, he will face the greatest embarrassment of having the Supreme Court SQUASH the validity of his presidential signature. Take this statement to the Bank. It is as good as gold. Lonta!” her comment reads.

The remark comes amid growing public debate over the Bill, which has generated opposition from civil society groups, religious bodies and the *Sierra Leone Labour Congress*. Critics argue that parts of the legislation undermine citizens’ right to directly elect Members of Parliament.

The Bill was passed by Parliament and is now awaiting presidential assent. The Constitution requires the President to either assent to or remit a Bill back to Parliament within a stipulated period.

Government is yet to officially respond to the latest warning.

Legal analysts note that any challenge to the validity of an enacted amendment would ultimately be determined by the Supreme Court, which has the final authority on constitutional matters in Sierra Leone.
