The Public Relations Officer of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Umu Bakar, has called on Sierra Leoneans to respect any determination by the Supreme Court on constitutional questions arising from the ongoing parliamentary process on the Constitutional Amendment Bill.

Bakar said SLAJ supports the decision by the Speaker of Parliament to seek guidance from the Supreme Court on the constitutional issues surrounding the matter, describing the issue as one of national importance.

According to her, the Supreme Court remains the appropriate institution to provide an authoritative interpretation of constitutional provisions in dispute.

She stressed that whatever determination the Court makes should be respected by all Sierra Leoneans, noting that the Constitution is the supreme legal framework governing the country.

Bakar also affirmed the responsibility of the media to provide accurate and accessible information on complex constitutional and legal matters.

She said journalists must help ordinary citizens understand developments in Parliament and the courts without resorting to political speculation or unverified claims.

The SLAJ PRO urged the media to maintain factual and responsible reporting as the constitutional matter progresses, emphasizing the importance of credible journalism in keeping the public properly informed on issues of national significance.
