Sierra Leone has secured its position as the 5th safest country to visit in Africa, according to the World Population Review’s 2024 insights, joining the ranks of Mauritius, Ghana, Gambia, and Botswana.

The Global Peace Index (GPI), a key metric in these rankings, assigned Sierra Leone a commendable score of 1.803, positioning it 50th globally. Published annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the GPI evaluates 23 indicators categorized into ongoing international and domestic conflicts, societal safety and security, and militarization.

These indicators encompass a range of factors, from the prevalence and duration of internal conflicts to diplomatic relations with neighboring countries, political stability, levels of violent crime, and perceived criminality in society. The amalgamation of these indicators results in a unified GPI value for each country, with a lower score indicating a more peaceful and safer environment.

Sierra Leone, a West African coastal nation celebrated for its expansive beaches, rainforests, and wildlife preserves, reflects its commitment to tranquility with a 1.803 GPI. However, despite its overall safety, visitors are cautioned about potential challenges in the capital city, Freetown. Local law enforcement, while dedicated, may face limitations in effectively responding to violent crimes like assault and armed robbery, which are more prevalent in urban areas.

Travelers are advised to exercise caution, especially in Freetown, and remain vigilant to ensure a secure experience. Civil unrest, capable of provoking demonstrations and protests, is another factor to be aware of and best avoided for a trouble-free visit.

Following Sierra Leone in this distinguished list of safe African destinations are Zambia, Equatorial Guinea, Malawi, Namibia, and Senegal. These countries, recognized for their commitment to peace and security, offer travelers an opportunity to explore diverse cultures and natural wonders within a harmonious and secure environment. As tourists seek new horizons, these rankings serve as a valuable guide for those in search of both adventure and safety on the African continent.
