Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr of the Freetown City Council (FCC) has officially commissioned the Kroo Bay Municipal Primary School, a newly constructed two-story facility designed to provide quality education for the local community.
The school was built with funding from Sustain for Life, in collaboration with the FCC, and implemented by the Sierra Leone Autistic Society.
The new school replaces a makeshift facility that previously operated out of a single room in a former community center, which frequently suffered from flooding. The upgraded structure features 10 classrooms, a computer room, staff room, toilets, and a canteen, with a capacity to accommodate 300 pupils. So far, 180 students have already enrolled.
In her keynote address, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed her gratitude to Sustain for Life for their partnership with FCC. She urged stakeholders to ensure the school becomes a “beacon of excellence,” emphasizing the importance of quality education and environmental stewardship.
“This project aligns with the FCC’s Transform Freetown Transforming Lives 2024-2028 Development Plan,” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr noted, highlighting the focus on early childhood development, basic education, and skills training under the Human Capital Development cluster. The initiative also contributes to the FCC’s broader goal of upgrading informal settlements.
The commissioning ceremony was held on the school grounds, marking a significant milestone for the Kroo Bay community in their pursuit of educational advancement and improved living conditions.
