The Deputy Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara, has officially commissioned the University-wide Solar Electrification Project at Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), describing the initiative as a significant step towards strengthening higher education through sustainable and reliable energy.
Representing the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr Haja Ramatulai Wurie, at the commissioning ceremony, the Deputy Minister praised the University’s leadership for what he described as a remarkable achievement that demonstrates visionary leadership, strategic planning, and a firm commitment to creating an enabling environment for teaching, learning, research, and administration.
He said the solar electrification project is a strategic investment that will deliver lasting benefits to the university community while enhancing the institution’s capacity to provide quality higher education.
Aziz-Kamara stressed that dependable electricity is critical for the effective functioning of any modern university, noting that the new solar system will provide uninterrupted power to classrooms, laboratories, libraries, information technology facilities, and administrative offices.
He added that the investment in renewable energy will not only reduce dependence on conventional electricity sources but also promote environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and sustainable energy solutions for the institution.
According to the Deputy Minister, students will benefit from improved access to learning facilities and digital resources, while lecturers, researchers, and administrative staff will enjoy a more conducive working environment that supports efficient service delivery and academic excellence.
He further commended EBKUST for its continued contribution to President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s Human Capital Development Agenda through the expansion of quality science and technology education, innovation, and institutional development.
Describing the project as a model for other tertiary institutions, Aziz-Kamara encouraged universities across Sierra Leone to adopt similar innovative and sustainable initiatives aimed at improving institutional performance and educational service delivery.
He reaffirmed the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education’s commitment to supporting EBKUST in fulfilling its mandate and pledged continued collaboration with the University’s leadership and development partners to advance initiatives that strengthen higher education and promote national development.
The commissioning of the University-wide Solar Electrification Project marks another milestone in Sierra Leone’s drive to modernise its higher education sector through sustainable infrastructure and improved learning environments.
