Mac’Ivan Kakpindi Vandy, the second of the three children of Pat Vandy and the second of two to Magdalene Mattu Ganda, both deceased. He was born and bred in Bo City, Southern Sierra Leone in the 90s when Sierra Leone suffered the brunt of a bitter, brutal civil war.
Schools in Bo like SOS Herman Gmeiner International School, Zenith International Academy, YWCA Pre-Primary School and Christ the King College all in Bo, and St. Augustine’s in Lungi contributed greatly to his academic upbringing. Growing up, Ivan wanted to become a Catholic Priest so he spent three years with the Salesians of Don Bosco, discerning to join the religious order but after three years, he dropped it off and enrolled at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone to pursue a degree in Mass Communication since he found out the Priesthood is not his calling.
At FBC, he mixed academics with social interaction and had a perfect blend of the two. Things became extra difficult financially for him and his family while at FBC but that didn’t serve as roadblock to his pursuit. He could walk from mount Aureole to Kingtom Police Barracks after lectures on a regular but always said “ar know how ar lef ose” (I know my background) and worked on making things right.
Mac’Ivan graduated with a Frist Class Degree in Mass Communications in April 2021 and he is currently the Information, Education and Communication Officer of the Bo City Council, an editor, program producer and entertainment presenter at Radio Bo Kiss 104.1 FM.
He is a musician with love for Christian music; he writes and sings songs, a voice coach and an instrumentalist.
For Ivan, “time wasted can never be regained” so one should always make hay while the sun shines no matter the crucibles you may face along the way.
