The Archdiocese of Freetown has issued an official clarification regarding the dress code for St. Joseph’s Convent Secondary School, following recent public discussions and growing interest surrounding the policy.
In a press release from its Communications Unit, the Archdiocese reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the identity, values, and long-standing traditions of Catholic institutions. It emphasized that all members of Catholic schools and affiliated associations are required to strictly adhere to the approved dress code as outlined in the institution’s Constitution.
According to the statement, the prescribed ceremonial uniform includes a white knee-length dress, flesh-colour tights, full black shoes, a white hat with hatband, a black handbag, and modest, inconspicuous jewellery.
The Archdiocese stressed that the dress code goes beyond physical appearance, describing it as a reflection of unity, discipline, modesty, and the rich Catholic identity and heritage upheld by the school.
It further noted that the Constitution remains the principal guiding document on such matters, adding that any proposed amendments to the dress code must follow established constitutional procedures and due process.
While reiterating that Catholic schools remain open to students of all religious backgrounds consistent with their mission of inclusivity and service the Archdiocese maintained that all members are expected to respect and uphold the institutions’ values, norms, and code of conduct.
In its final position, the Archdiocese stated that the existing dress code, as contained in the Constitution, remains unchanged and binding, underscoring its firm stance on safeguarding the Catholic identity and traditions of its schools.
