The Sierra Leone Grammar School (SLGS), a prestigious institution and the oldest and most renowned learning institution in the sub-region, marked a remarkable milestone on Thursday, 20th March 2025, as it celebrated its 180th anniversary, Speech Day, and Prize-Giving Ceremony.

The grand occasion, held at the historic campus in Murray Town, brought together a distinguished gathering of alumni, students, faculty, and guests for a memorable Speech Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony.

Among the notable attendees was Francis Ben Kaifala, the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and an alumnus of the school, who delivered the keynote address. His speech was both a nostalgic reflection on his own time at SLGS and an inspiring call to action for the current generation of students.

In his speech, Kaifala shared personal anecdotes from his years as a student, highlighting the formative experiences that shaped his character. Recalling moments from his early days at the school, he spoke fondly of the guidance he received from faculty and the values instilled in him, such as the importance of integrity and hard work. His narrative included light-hearted stories, including a humorous recount of how he was late for his admission interview due to his uncle’s excitement, which set the stage for his eventual success at the school.

Reflecting on his journey from a young boy navigating a tumultuous period in Sierra Leone’s history to becoming a lawyer and ACC Commissioner, Kaifala emphasized the power of education in overcoming adversity. Drawing from his own experiences, he encouraged students to embrace education as a tool for personal development and societal change. He spoke of his early challenges, including periods of hunger and uncertainty, but emphasized how these hardships fueled his determination to succeed.

Kaifala’s speech was filled with motivation, urging Regentonians to remain committed to their education despite the challenges they may face. He shared key life lessons, advising the students to love learning, be tenacious in their pursuits, and cultivate friendships that would enrich their academic and professional lives. He also urged students to appreciate the diversity within their school community and to learn from different academic streams and backgrounds.

The event was a celebration not only of the school’s rich history but also of the achievements of its students. Kaifala’s powerful words resonated with the audience, leaving a lasting impact on the next generation of Regentonians who are poised to continue the legacy of excellence at Sierra Leone Grammar School.

As part of the ceremony, numerous students were recognized for their outstanding achievements in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities, a testament to the tradition of excellence that SLGS continues to uphold. Kaifala’s inspiring address was a fitting tribute to the school’s legacy and its role in shaping the future leaders of Sierra Leone.

The event concluded on a high note, with a renewed sense of pride and purpose among the students, alumni, and faculty, all united in their commitment to the continued success and growth of Sierra Leone Grammar School.
