AdvocAid, a feminist legal organization, partnered with the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs to celebrate International Women’s Day 2024 with a symposium in Kenema on March 12th.

The theme for this year’s IWD, “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress,” resonated throughout the event. Discussions focused on promoting a gender-sensitive justice system to lessen the impact of incarceration on women, girls, and their children.

The symposium brought together diverse stakeholders including the Ministry, National Federation of Go Bifo Women Sierra Leone, Legal Aid organizations, and women’s rights advocates. Participants included representatives from the Rainbo Center, the Sierra Leone Police, and the Human Rights Commission.

Jalahan Amara Jakema, AdvocAid’s South East Programmes Officer, emphasized that the symposium not only addressed the justice system but also celebrated women across all sectors. “We encourage all women to take on the challenge of community development and move beyond the sidelines in decision-making,” she stated.

Sub-Inspector Brima James Musa, the Police Public Relations Officer, acknowledged the timeliness of the forum. He stressed the importance of investing in women from various angles. “Effective education for women is crucial,” he said, “equipping them for future challenges and allowing them to lead and implement community-driven projects.”

Musa emphasized the police’s ongoing commitment to community safety. He encouraged women to report issues requiring police intervention and participate in community policing through information sharing.

The symposium concluded with stakeholders making commitments to enhance women’s development and protection. Stronger voices for women in all spheres were highlighted as key to ensuring sustainable development.
