The Africa Young Voices Media Empire has stepped in to support the recovery of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation with a cash donation of NLe10,000 following a recent fire outbreak that damaged parts of the national broadcaster’s facilities.
The donation was presented during a solidarity visit by an AYV delegation led by Managing Director Umaru Fofana, who conveyed sympathies on behalf of the company’s leadership and staff. The team also toured the affected areas to assess the extent of damage caused by the blaze.
Speaking during the visit, Fofana described the incident as unfortunate and reaffirmed AYV’s commitment to supporting fellow media institutions in times of difficulty. He encouraged the management and staff of SLBC to remain resilient, expressing confidence that the institution would recover stronger from the setback.
Receiving the donation, Director General Josephine Fatmata Kamara expressed appreciation for the gesture, noting that it came at a critical time when the institution is working to rebuild.
She revealed that SLBC had already been undergoing infrastructural improvements prior to the fire, describing the incident as a significant setback to ongoing reform efforts. Kamara called on corporate institutions, development partners, and well-meaning individuals to support the recovery process and help strengthen the country’s public broadcaster.
The fire, which broke out on April 8, 2026, caused considerable damage, including to the office of the Deputy Director General. However, swift intervention by staff and emergency responders helped contain the blaze, preventing further destruction.
As recovery efforts begin, AYV’s contribution is expected to provide immediate support while broader calls continue for national assistance to restore SLBC’s operations and infrastructure.
