A newly constructed primary health care unit hospital at Karlu Town of Ya-Kemoh Kpukumu Krim, Pujehun District, funded by the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) is facing a critical threat as bat infestation engulfs the entire building, rendering the hospital non-functional.
The hospital, which is just three years old, was intended to serve the local community with modern healthcare facilities. However, the invasion of bats has caused substantial damage and raised concerns among both local residents and officials.
Joseph Jiah, the hospital’s in-charge, expressed frustration at the challenges posed by the bat infestation. Despite ongoing efforts by the central government to provide necessary resources, the hospital struggles to operate effectively due to the overwhelming presence of bats. The situation jeopardizes the health and safety of both patients and staff.
Paramount Chief Matinda Yayieu Minah, leader of the Krim Chiefdom, expressed disappointment at the hospital’s current state. Project documents indicated that the hospital was supposed to be equipped with functioning electronic gadgets. However, the bats have taken control, preventing the hospital from fulfilling its intended purpose. Chief Minah urged the government to urgently address the situation and provide the necessary support to make the hospital fully operational.
Mariama Sannoh, a lactating mother, shared her dissatisfaction with the hospital’s condition. While the exterior appears impressive, the lack of basic facilities such as running water taps, a reliable electricity supply, and proper road access renders the hospital ineffective. Sannoh criticized the government for what she sees as a futile and wasteful construction, given the current state of the hospital.
The bat infestation has severely impacted the hospital’s ability to provide essential healthcare services to Karlu Town and its surrounding areas. Urgent intervention from the government is required to address the infestation, repair damages, and provide necessary resources for the hospital to function as a fully operational and well-equipped healthcare facility.
The community and local officials await the government’s response to this pressing issue, hoping to transform the hospital into a model healthcare center for the district. The health and well-being of the residents hang in the balance as swift action is needed to resolve the bat infestation and restore the hospital to its intended purpose.
