On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the Bo District Council hosted a high-level meeting with the British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Josephine Gauld, to discuss development challenges and enhance bilateral cooperation.
The event, held at the Provincial Secretary’s Office on Tikonko Road, brought together key local stakeholders to address issues including governance, infrastructure, education, and economic development in Bo District and the wider Southern Province.
During the meeting, Bo District Council Chairman Victor Korseh Hindowa emphasized the UK’s longstanding support in sectors such as healthcare and education, while highlighting the district’s need for greater financial independence. He called for enhanced local revenue generation to reduce dependence on external donor funding, and raised concerns over infrastructure shortcomings and youth unemployment.
Chief Administrator of the council, Vivian Sally Senesie, reiterated the importance of broadening local revenue streams and called for international partnerships to strengthen the council’s capacity in governance and decentralization. She also stressed the need for investment in industrial ventures, particularly local factories, to create jobs and combat youth unemployment.
Development and Planning Officer Elfrida Bockarie outlined the difficulties facing local farmers, especially limited access to essential farming equipment. She called for more support to boost agricultural production, critical for the district’s economic stability.
High Commissioner Gauld reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with Bo District and praised local initiatives, such as the Sierra Garri Bo Factory, which integrates modern technology and provides jobs for marginalized groups. Her visit underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing the district’s development needs.
This engagement marked a step forward in reinforcing ties between Bo District and the UK, aiming to address key challenges in the region.
